|Farnsley Middle School was designed with the Information Age in mind and features computer, science, and audiovisual labs that are integrated and that feed into a state-of-the-art presentation auditorium. With construction well underway, Farnsley’s principal, Jan Calvert, was concerned that the new school lacked the “personality” necessary to inspire and motivate her students. Calvert asked Swope Design Group to “add life” to her school’s interiors, but there was a catch—the changes couldn’t add to the cost or slow the pace of construction. Swope met this challenge by introducing a dramatic new paint scheme for walls, plus new colors and patterning for floor tiles. In addition to adding life to the space, the new colors and floor tiles were designed to provide wayfinding cues. Additional environmental graphic enhancements to the school included inspirational banners in the main lobby and a large mascot graphic in the gym—paid for by the PTA.|
